Psychedelic medicine research for mental health recovery is gaining traction and becoming legal in many states. Many controversies remain, most notably the use of psychedelics among those with a history of addictive disorders. The panel consists of addiction experts who have direct experience utilizing psychedelics among those with a wide range of psychiatric profiles. We will discuss indications, contraindications, blind spots, controversies, and best practices when considering psychedelic medicine for addiction recovery.

Joyce Braverman, MD

Dr. Joyce Braverman was born and raised in Mexico, where she earned her medical degree from Anรกhuac University. She began her career assisting in pediatric surgical oncology, an experience that shaped her understanding of resilience and the human spirit in the face of illness. Over time, her work evolved toward a more integrative vision of healing. Rooted in mind-body medicine and the therapeutic use of medicinal plants, Dr. Braverman is especially devoted to supporting patients navigating life-limiting conditions. She is currently advancing her expertise in functional medicine while exploring the clinical potential of psychedelic-assisted therapy. Her mission is to unite rigorous science with ancestral wisdom to foster healing.

Dana Lerman, MD

Dr. Dana Lerman is a physician and the founder of Skylight Psychedelics, a national organization dedicated to training clinicians in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and expanding safe, ethical access to ketamine treatment. With a background in internal medicine, infectious disease, and psychedelic medicine, Dr. Lerman brings a uniquely integrative and trauma-informed perspective to the evolving landscape of mental health and addiction care. Her work focuses on the intersection of substance use disorders, trauma, and psychedelic therapies, with a particular emphasis on the use of ketamine in therapeutic settings.

Kalen Flynn, MD

Dr. Kalen Flynn is a holistic psychiatrist and stage IV cancer survivor. Her experiences as a patient in the Western medical system have drawn her to the practice of integrative and functional medicine. She has a special interest in psychedelic medicine and has spent the past decade studying ayahuasca healing and engaging in traditional master plant dietas with Shipibo healers in the Peruvian Amazon. She currently has a private practice in Silver Lake and works as a clinical researcher and psilocybin study therapist.

Yeshaia Blakeney

Yeshaia Blakeney is a father of four and husband, serving as the CEO and cofounder of the Recover Integrity treatment program and the Antedote wholeness program. He acts as an informal liaison between the psychedelic and recovery communities. An assistant Rabbi, Yeshaia is deeply interested in the intersection of mental health, psychedelics, spirituality, psychology, philosophy, and the arts.

Marcos Mourkakos

Marcos Mourkakos is an emerging leader in addiction recovery and self-actualization. At Nuno Recovery in Costa Rica, he offers personalized addiction pre-care, detox, treatment, and aftercare services for individuals struggling with treatment-resistant mental health disorders. Marcos collaborates with recovery specialists and shamanic healers worldwide. His approach seamlessly blends modern science and ancient modalities to cater to the unique needs of each client.

Dr. David Wiss is a thought leader in nutrition and lifestyle interventions for mental health and addiction recovery. Dr. Wiss is the founder of Nutrition in Recovery, a group practice in Los Angeles, and the Wise Mind Nutrition mobile app. His approach to treatment is grounded in principles from the Institute of Functional Medicine and based on his extensive publication history on substance use disorders, eating disorders, and ultra-processed food addiction. Dr. Wiss is known for exploring the boundaries of addiction recovery and welcomes the next wave of treatment modalities.
